Estonia has formalized the purchase of six K239 Chunmoo multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), manufactured in South Korea, in a contract valued at $342.2 million.
The agreement, signed with Hanwha Aerospace, includes not only the launchers but also training and operational support, with deliveries expected to begin in the second half of 2027. The new systems will operate alongside the American HIMARS launchers already in service, enhancing the deep-strike capability of Estonia’s Defense Forces.
The contract package specifies the types of ammunition to be supplied, including CGR-080 rockets with a range of up to 80 kilometers, CTM-MR rockets with a range of up to 160 kilometers, and tactical ballistic missiles CTM-290, capable of striking targets up to 290 kilometers away.
Additionally, some of the launchers will undergo modifications to meet local operational conditions and Estonian traffic regulations, ensuring full integration with the country’s environment and infrastructure.
Alongside the Chunmoo acquisition, Estonia also announced a significant reinforcement of its rocket artillery by deciding to double the number of HIMARS systems in service. The country will receive six additional launchers, as well as a large batch of guided rockets and ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles.
The contract with Hanwha also includes investments between $47.2 million and $70.8 million in Estonia’s defense industry over the next decade, strengthening the local industrial base and the sustainment capability of the new systems.
